"The right mobility aid can reduce fall risk, conserve energy, decrease pain, and give people both the physical support and the psychological confidence they need to stay active," says Partha Nandi, M.D., a clinical associate professor of medicine at Michigan State University in East Lansing. "It is a piece of equipment that allows someone to keep moving, keep participating in daily life, and keep doing the things that matter to them."
But once you've determined that a mobility device is needed, the next question is: Which one? Is a manual wheelchair or electric power chair better? - Do you tire easily? If your parent has less stamina than they did a few years ago, a device with a built-in seat can help them rest when needed.
- How is your balance these days? Balance issues often increase with age. If balance is a challenge, a device that provides bilateral stability, like a walker or rollator, is better than a cane.
- Do you think you need mobility support indoors, outdoors, or both? Some devices are designed for indoor use only; make sure you choose one that works well wherever your parent may need it.
- Are you comfortable getting in and out of chairs? Transferring from one seat to another is a frequent point of difficulty, but there are products that provide support.
- How do you feel about getting a mobility aid? Choosing mobility support is emotional. Take the time to listen to your parent and make sure they are part of the process.
Sometimes, people downplay their mobility concerns or limitations, Biel explains. "Parents don't want to be a burden to their children," she says, noting the irony that these same parents spent years caring for their now-adult child. "It can help to remind them that they took such good care of you, it feels good to you to give some of that loving care back."

The options for mobility aids are growing, and the number of choices can feel overwhelming to a first-time shopper. Finding the right fit starts with evaluating your lifestyle and needs. Think about where and when the mobility device will be used, and which features are most important.

The seat is especially helpful, says Dr. Nandi, because a person can sit and rest whenever needed. Managing fatigue is a key consideration for maintaining mobility, so it's helpful to have a device that encourages walking while still offering a chance to take a break, he adds.
Considerations for whether rollators are the right choice include the fact that they require coordination and some upper-body strength for maneuvering the device. Also, the wheels move freely, so if the brakes are not engaged, a rollator can move forward on its own, which increases risk of falls if balance is an issue.
Pros and Cons of Manual Wheelchairs
For people with temporary mobility limitations or permanent lower body mobility loss, manual wheelchairs can be a solid choice. They tend to be lightweight, more affordable than a power chair or scooter, and don't require batteries or charging. Many models fold up, making them convenient for travel.
Because they're manually driven, the downside is that a person needs to have adequate upper-body strength to propel themselves forward. This may be particularly an issue with steep ramps, longer distances, and uneven terrain, which can be more physically demanding. The alternative is having a caregiver push the wheelchair.
Pros and Cons of Lightweight Electric Wheelchairs (Power Chairs)
For those with limited strength and endurance, power chairs provide a high level of mobility, since they're operated with adaptive controls such as a joystick. They can be utilized for longer distances and on multiple types of surfaces, and features like adjustable leg rests and seats make power chairs comfortable.
Power chairs are typically more expensive than manual wheelchairs and require regular battery charging as well as ongoing maintenance. While the lightweight models can easily fold and store in a vehicle, the heavier versions can make transportation more challenging if vehicles don't have wheelchair lifts.
Pros and Cons of Mobility Scooters
Although mobility scooters can be used for longer outings, they tend to work well for people who can walk short distances but tire easily, says Dr. Nandi. Scooters provide comfortable and safe travel indoors and out (although they work best in bigger spaces), including grocery stores, event centers, and malls, providing a sense of independence. Research suggests scooters also allow older adults to participate in activities they may not have been able to access otherwise, due to discomfort or fatigue.
Because of their size, mobility scooters are not ideal in smaller indoor spaces compared to power chairs, and the size also makes transportation and storage a consideration. Dr. Nandi adds that scooters also require users to have adequate balance and coordination, as well as enough hand strength to operate the controls.
Features to Consider When Choosing a Mobility Aid
Mobility aids come in various shapes and sizes with different features depending on the model, making it overwhelming to compare one to another, says Dr. Nandi. As a starting point, these are the features he suggests considering:
Weight Capacity
The amount of weight a device can safely support is a safety issue. Always verify that the device is rated for the user's weight. Standard devices support 250–300 pounds; heavy-duty models accommodate higher weights. If a product's guidelines specify "up to 300 pounds" and a person weighs 299, always move up to the larger size for safety.
Comfort and Adjustability
Consider seat width, cushioning, armrests, and footrests. Adjustable features enhance comfort and reduce fatigue. A device set at the wrong height, even by an inch or two, can cause pain, poor posture, and fall risk.
Battery Range
A power chair or scooter with insufficient battery life for a person's daily routine will quickly become frustrating or dangerous. Keep in mind that the range is usually listed as "up to" a certain distance but the actual distance it will cover before requiring a recharge depends on the terrain and other environmental factors including incline. For example, an uneven hilly surface outside will consume battery power much faster than a flat floor indoors.
Dimensions and Maneuverability
Will the device fit through doorways? Navigate the bathroom? Turn in the kitchen? In general, lightweight electric wheelchairs have a tighter turning radius than mobility scooters, but you should always measure before you purchase.
Transportation
How will you get the device in and out of a car? Will you have help or is this a one-person job? Some walkers and rollators fold compactly, as do certain lightweight portable power chairs. Mobility aids that can easily be separated into pieces for convenient transportation or storage may be advantageous. Other devices, including some scooters, require vehicle lifts or ramps.
Ease of Use
The best-quality device will likely gather dust if its mechanics are too complex. Look for intuitive controls, quick folding mechanisms, and accessible batteries in power devices. Flip-back armrests are great for side transfers and also make it easy to seamlessly sit at a table or desk.
Meanwhile, quiet motors make operating power mobility devices easier in indoor settings. And the ability to quickly adjust your speed or stop is crucial. If upper-body strength is a concern, look for joystick controls that are easy to operate, even with limited dexterity.
Storage
Another important factor is storage, says Dr. Nandi. Where will the device be located when not in use? That's a primary consideration, because if there's not enough room in an existing space, the mobility aid could become a tripping hazard. This doesn't mean you have to choose a mobility aid based only on the size of a living space—instead, it usually means you may have to adjust furniture arrangements, closet space, and overall organization to store the device safely.

Not all mobility aids are created equal. If a device is no longer sufficient enough to meet daily needs, you may notice changes in movement patterns, says Dr. Nandi. "Watch for continued falls or near-falls despite using the device," he says. "Other signs include leaning heavily on one side, compensating posture, or signs of pain in the shoulders, wrists, or back."
These may indicate the device is the wrong type or size. If someone is avoiding activities they used to do, or abandoning the device and moving without it, that is a sign something is not right, he adds.
Mobility needs evolve over time, so it's good to regularly reassess if a device is providing enough support. Reassessment should happen any time there is a significant change in health, strength, or living environment, not just when something goes wrong.
How to Involve Your Parent in the Decision
Changes in mobility are stressful, particularly because they may come with feelings of vulnerability or frailty, says Marty Maidenberg, a psychotherapist with Pathways Psychological Services in New York City. Those feelings can be intensified if you are making decisions as a caregiver and your parent feels they don't have a say in the process, he adds.
"Because of that, it's crucial to involve your parent in the discussion from the start," Maidenberg says. "Be careful not to adopt a tone that sounds like you're telling your parent what to do, or that you have the final say in what type of mobility aid is chosen." Having a conversation in which everyone's opinion is heard preserves independence and dignity.
Greater adoption of mobility aids and long-term use go up when the person who will be using them is involved in the decision-making, he adds. Otherwise, a parent who feels they don't really need mobility support may avoid using the equipment when you're not around, which can significantly increase the risk of falls and injuries.
By focusing on current needs, future needs, safety, and overall lifestyle, and making sure everyone's voice is heard, you'll be well-positioned to find a mobility solution that makes life easier and preserves independence.
