The arrival of a new mobility aid is exciting. But it can also be a little intimidating! The good news is that the UPWalker Premium Lite Gen 3 Rollator comes largely assembled and does not require tools. You just need to unfold the frame, click a few components into place, adjust the armrests, and attach the included accessories.

Simple, right? The next step: Spending a little time learning how it moves, turns, brakes, and folds. A few short practice sessions can help the device begin to feel like a natural part of your routine.

What to Expect When the Box Arrives

Place the unopened box on a level floor with enough space to remove the UPWalker safely. The Gen 3 rollator is relatively light at 22 pounds, but always ask someone to help if lifting it out of the box feels difficult or awkward.

Your box should include:

  • UPWalker Gen 3 frame
  • Two front wheels
  • Two sit-to-stand handgrips
  • Backrest
  • Personal item bag
  • Phone-and-cup holder
  • Two universal arm pad covers
  • Two motion-detection lights and charging cables
  • Product manual

Inspect the frame, wheels, brakes, and accessories for visible damage. Do not use the UPWalker if anything is missing, loose, or damaged. Save the packaging until you have confirmed that everything is working properly.

Complete the Tool-Free Setup

No tools are required, but several pieces must be secured before the UPWalker is ready for use. Follow these steps:

  1. Attach the sit-to-stand handgrips. Push each grip firmly into its opening on the frame until you hear it click.
  2. Insert the front wheels. Push each wheel into the front frame tube until it clicks securely into position. Gently pull on each wheel to confirm it is locked.
  3. Lower the rear wheels. Pull each rear wheel assembly outward to release it from the magnet, then swing it down until the wheel reaches the floor.
  4. Secure the rear wheel assemblies. Fasten the black tabs to the hook-and-loop attachments on the lower frame. Do not begin walking until both sides are secured.
  5. Open and lock the seat. Pull the padded arm supports apart to open the frame. Press the seat down firmly until you hear or feel it click into place.
  6. Attach the backrest. Position it so the UPWalker logo faces forward in the direction you will walk. Slide both sides into the frame and gently pull upward to confirm it is secure.
  7. Add the bag and holder. Hook the personal item bag onto the front seat tubing. The phone-and-cup holder can be attached to either armrest rail.

Also, place the washable covers over the padded forearm supports and charge the motion-detection lights before your first outing.

Adjust the UPWalker to Fit You

One of the key benefits of this rollator is that you can adjust its fit to your body. A correct fit helps you walk upright without lifting your shoulders, reaching down, or leaning heavily into the frame.

To make adjustments, press the orange button inside each armrest tube and slide the armrest up or down. Release the button to lock the pin into place. Both armrests should be set at the same height, and both locking pins must be fully engaged. When positioned correctly, the padded supports should comfortably meet your forearms while allowing you to stand upright and keep your gaze forward. The handgrips and brake levers should be easy to reach without stretching.

The UPWalker Gen 3 is designed for people approximately 4'10" to 6'1" and supports up to 400 pounds. If you are unsure about the fit or your walking position, ask a physical or occupational therapist for help adjusting it.

Learn the Brakes

The UPWalker has one brake handle on each handgrip. Practice using them while standing still on a level surface. To slow or stop, squeeze both brake handles toward the handgrips. Apply pressure evenly so the rollator does not pull to one side. To set the parking brakes, press both handles downward until they click into the locked position. You'll want to lock both brakes before sitting, standing, or stepping away from the UPWalker.

To release the parking brakes, squeeze the handles inward slightly and let go. The handles should return to their upright position and the wheels should roll freely.

Practice Makes Perfect

Eventually, walking with your UPWalker Gen 3 should feel as natural as walking on your own, but it takes a little practice. Begin in an open, uncluttered area with a level floor. Stand inside the frame rather than behind it. Rest your forearms evenly on the padded supports, hold both handgrips, and look ahead. Take short, comfortable steps and allow the rollator to move with you.

To get the hang of things, these are a few walking "moves" to try:

  • Start and stop gradually
  • Walk in a straight line
  • Make wide, controlled turns
  • Move through a doorway
  • Cross a small threshold
  • Change direction

Sitting in the rollator seat will also become second nature to you, but getting used to it takes a little time. Follow these steps:

  • Stop the rollator on a flat, level surface and lock both parking brakes. Confirm that the seat is fully open and locked.
  • Turn carefully until the back of your legs touches the seat, keep hold of the handgrips, and lower yourself slowly.
  • When you are ready to stand, pull out the two lower sit-to-stand handles. Make sure the brakes remain locked, place your hands evenly on the handles, and rise slowly.
  • Turn to face forward and return your hands to the walking grips. Slide the lower handles back into the frame.

Take Your Time

Any new mobility device takes a little time to get used to. That's normal. Start by using it on short, familiar routes and gradually build confidence. Before each use, confirm that the seat and rear wheels are locked in position, test both brakes, and make sure bags and clothing cannot catch in the wheels.

After using the UPWalker Gen 3, store it in a clean, dry place where it will not create a tripping hazard. Wipe the frame and padded surfaces with a damp cloth and mild detergent and allow everything to dry completely. Recharge the motion lights so they are ready for your next use.

As you become more familiar with the rollator, you'll find the UPWalker Gen 3 is good at the things that matter most: helping you walk more comfortably, rest when you need to, and approach everyday activities with greater confidence.
